Many cigarette smokers avlio prefer loose tobacco found on Saturday that one-ounce tins have been replaced by containers made of cardboard, says the “New Zealand Herald.,” A tobacconist said that the change was the result of a Government measure aimed at conserving supplies of metal. The tobacco companies, allowed to pack their product in tins of only one size, have kept the standard two-ounce tins, Avhile changing the one-ounce container for something less valuable.
If the falling of a high-tension wire kills or injures people in a street or stock in a paddock, those suffering loss have no means of securing compensation unless it can be proved that the power board concerned has been negligent. This is how the law stands today, it was explained at a meeting of the Central Hawke’s Bay Electric Power Board. Members emphasised the necessity for some protection for those placed in danger by the presence of “live” wires. It was decided to refer the mattei’ to the Minister of Public Works (Mr. Semple), and to the Power Boards’ and Supply Authorities’ Association. The discussion arose from the recent electrocution of three cows on a farm at Pukeora owned by the Waipawa Hospital Board, when an electric wire fell in a paddock. The power board’s insurance company offered an ex gratia payment of £l5, although no liability existed. The hospital beard accepted this in full payment. The engineer, Mr. G. L. Beer, said it would be impossible for a linesman to approach too, close to poles carrying 11,000-volt lines to inspect cross-arms and therefore a shutdown of electric power in the area would be essential. The insurance company, in a letter to the board, recommended that for the safety of the public such shutdown should be insisted upon regularly.
