WAR COMFORTS

ARTICLES THAT WILL BE NEEDED Persons desiring to assist the fighting forces can do so by providing them with woollen garments which those at present in Europe are most urgently in need of and which our own forces will require next winter. The Royal Engineers’ War Comforts Committee has drafted specifications of the following articles: — Gloves.—Colour, khaki or near shade;. width across palm, 1 to 41 inches; material, three-ply wheeling or double knitting wool. Mittens.—-Colour, khaki or near shade; width, across palm, 4J to 5 inches; over-all length, 9 inches; length of rib-cuff, 4 inches; thumb opening formed by a row of stitching 1 inch deep: material, three-ply wheeling or double knitting wool. Camp Comforters.—-Colour, khaki or near shade; width, inches; length, 32 inches; knitted tubular and closed at each end; material, three-ply fingering.

Jerseys.—Colour, khaki or near shade; width of body, 18 to 20 inches; length of body, 25 to 26 inches; length of sleeves, 22 to 23 inches;knitted with V-neck; material three qr fourply wool fingering. Socks. —Colour, Army grey or khaki, grey for preference; length of leg, 11 to 15 inches; length of foot 101 to 11 inches; width, 41 inches; knitted with rib top and plain leg and foot; material, three-ply wheeling or four or five-ply fingering. Scarves. —Colour, khaki or near shade; length, 48 inches; width, inches; circular neck. It is suggested that assistance may be rendered by making up the articles or by purchasing same ready made or by subscribing to a fund to purchase wool in bulk to give to any women wishing for a supply of wool to work with.

In order that New Zealand trobps overseas should have comforts' for the next winter, ’women should commence knitting these articles now so that they can be forwarded to any unit or individual in ample time for the cold weather.
