WELLINGTON EXPLOSIONS
DETONATOR ON TRAM-LINE N ’ [PEB PBIBB ASSOCIATION.]
WELLINGTON, February 12. Another explosion —the third Within a few days—beneath the wheels or a Wellington tramcar occurred shortly before nine o’clock to-night. The tramcar, which was leaving the city for the exhibition, was turning from Cuba Street into Webb Street when there was a loud explosion from under the leading wheels. Passengers and residents of-the locality were alarmed by the noise. The tram was stopped by the motorman within a few yards. Investigation revealed no damage, and nobody was hurt. From the character of the explosion the tramway authorities believe that it was caused by a detonator maliciously placed on the line. Detectives are investigating. The first explosion, which badly damaged a tramcar in Berhampore last Wednesday night, is still the subject of police inquiry. It is understood that a considerable amount of evidence lias been collected. After the explosion a quantity of residue in the form of powder was obtained from the track, and this is being chemically analysed. The police are believed to have taken a number of statements from persons who may be able to throw light on the occurrence. A second explosion occurred in Vivian Street on Thursday morning. No damage was done, and it is thought that it was caused by a detonator.
