TAX ON BACHELORS

PLAN TO BE CONSIDERED CANBERRA, January 25. Bachelors 'will be called on to make a, special contribution to war taxation if one, of a number of new taxation plans to be submitted to- the Commonwealth Government is adopted. Tho plan may also- affect about 30,000 unmarried women in employment. The suggestion is that the statutory exemption from Federal taxation should be reduced to- £lOO for unmarried persons*. This- would affect- about 500,000 bachelors as well as girls in offices and factories. It is generally admitted in Federal quarters that, subject to special provision for bachelors supporting parents or other near relations, the- principle is fair, but the cost of administration -would be high, and might absorb much of the extra revenue. It is believed that the Ministry w’ill decide to reimpose the- Federal amusement tax either in financial proposals to be. submitted in April, or in next year’s Budget. Another increase in sales tax, and further increases in income tax are regarded as practically inescapable.
