KING IN FRONT LINE
VISIT TO BRITISH TROOPS.
[by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, December 5. The King spent' eight hours With his armies in France, Visiting-front-line positions, accompanied by the Commandei’-in-Chief (GeneralJ Lord Gort), the Duke of Gloucester, and other high officers. „
His Majesty reviewed a Highland battalion a quarter of a mile behind the barbed wire. Later he stood on top of a pillbox to survey a potential battlefield and hear a full explanation of future tactics.
He passed through miles of troops drawn up along muddy roadsides. His movements could be traced by the rolling bursts of cheers which marked his progress in the Royal car. Knots of French civilians lined the streets of the towns and villages through which the party returned to General Headquarters.
Their Majesties are sending Christmas cards to all members of the Army and Air Force in France. • The British United Press correspondent with the British Expeditionary Force says: In the bitter cold, His Majesty made an early start on the second clay, of his tour. He was surprised to find less mud than he expected, and smilingly asked his aide, “Shoudn’t I be muddier?” An official cameraman is accompanying His Majesty everywhere, and a complete film of the tour will be released for public exhibition. ENEMY RAIDS REPULSED. PARIS, December. 6. Apparently attempting to verify an Allied battle order, the Germans carried out. a series of raids. All were repulsed, and the Germans left a number of dead.
