Mr. F. E. Roud, Punakaiki, is an inmate of the Grey Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. H. D. James returned on Saturday, from Christchurch. Mr. and Mrs. G. White returned on Saturday, from Christchurch. Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Johnstone left to-day tor Timaru. Mrs. R. S. Stewart left, to-day on a visit to Wellington. Mr. J. Guy, junr., left to-day for Christchurch. .... 7,:. Miss D. Prestige left to-day for Christchurch. Mr. J. Williams left to-day for Christchurch. Lance-Corporal R. P. Chibhall and Private L. Herbert left to-day on re- - turn to Burnham. Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Sweetman returned on Saturday, from Christchurch and Timaru. „ Mr. F. R. Palliser-Smith will leave to-morrow, on transfer to Christchurch. Mr. and Mrs. P. J. McLean returned yesterday, from a holiday visit to Wellington and Christchurch. The death is reported from London of the New Zealand journalist, Mr. J. P. Whitelaw, of the “News-Chronicle” staff. A Sydney cablegram announced that Mr. R. E. G. Goddard, secretary of the Colonial Sugar Refining Company died suddenly at the age of 54. A London cablegram announced the death of Mrs. H. M. Swanwick, aged 75. She was editor for many years of the British monthly, “Foreign Affairs.”

Sister Gillespie of the Westland Hospital, has received advice of her appointment as matron of the Opotiki Hospital. She will take over , her new duties at an early date.

A cablegram from London stated that with a special shoe on his affect-' - ed foot, Mr. Chamberlain was able to walk out of doors, for the first time since his attack of gout incapacitated him.

An Official Wireless message stated that the following telegram has been; addressed by the. King to the Acting-President of the Republic of Ecuador: I greatly regret to learn of the sad loss the Republic has sustained in the death of its distinguished President, Dr. Mosquera Narvrez.

Forty years’ service with the Post and Telegraph Department has been ■ completed by Mr. S. A. Bennett, supervisor of the telegraph .i delivery branch of the Chief Post Office, Auckland, who has retired on superannuation. Mr. Bennett joined the department as a message boy in 1899 and has been stationed at Auckland during all but four years of his service. From 1910 to 1913 he was at .Wellington.

The death occurred at his residence, Fox Street, Cobden, early this morning; of Mr. William Calder, a native of Riverton, aged 73 years. Deceased came to the West. Coast about 35 years ago, following the occupation of a millwright. He is survived by his wife, one son* Oscar (Cobden) and two daughters, Mrs. E. Cohen (Black’s Point) and Mrs. Creighton (Cobden), also seven grandchildren. The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon, at Karoro Cemetery, leaving the residence at 2 o’clock.

The death took place at the Inangahua Hospital, yesterday, of Mrs. Elizabeth White, of Black’s Point. A native of Brunnerton, aged 55 years, deceased was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs. George Julian. Her husband predeceased her some years ago, and she is survived by. two sons, William (Black’s Point) and Carnuel (Welling-, ton) and one daughter, Miss Mabel White (Black’s Point). She also leaves one brother, Mr. T. Julian (Brunner ton) and two sisters, Mesdames Fenson (Black’s Point) and E. Franklin (Wellington). The funeral will take place to-morrow.

The death occurred at Greymouth, on Saturday evening, of Mrs. Marion Helen Heslin, of Dunollie. A daughter of Mr. George Millar, of Runanga, deceased was a native of Brunner, aged 53 years, and had spent the whole of her life in the Brunner and Runanga districts. She had been in illhealth for some time. Her husband, Mr. Frederick Heslin, predeceased her only two months ago, and she is survived by three sons, Frederick and Kevin (Dunollie), and George (Greymcuth) and three daughters, Mrs. A. Kaye and Misses Patricia and Marcia Heslin (Dunollie). She is. also survived by one brother, Mr. Thomas Millar (Runanga), and three sisters, Mesdames W. Murphy (Runanga),F. Wootton (Greymouth), and Miss Cecilia Mil- , lar (Runanga). The funeral will take place to-morrow morning, at Karoro Cemetery, leaving the Church of the Sacred Heart, Runanga at 9.45 o’clock. Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 9.15 o’clock.
