RADIO PERFORMERS
REDUCED 8.8. C. WORK
LONDON, September 23.
Thousands of artists who . have broadcast for the 8.8. C. from time to time have had no radio engagements since the outbreak of war. The 8.8. C. which is now broadcasting a single programme, has formed two small repertory companies from artists who have been broadcasting regularly for some years, and these are providing a great part of the programme. The dramatic repertory company has a membership of about 30, and the company giving variety programmes is about 20 strong. Officially it is explained that, owing to the partial evaccuation of Broadcasting House to “somewhere, in England,” is Ayas necessary to have permanent resident companies upon which to draw. Performers who have suddenly had all sources of income cut off, including broadcasting, are considering sending a deputation to Mr. F. W. Ogilvie, the Director-General, to urge that the 8.8. C. should use their services rallied than gramophone records. The 8.8. C. states that its programme will gradually return to more normal conditions. Mr. Vai Gielgud, the drama director, has completed plans for next week and for October, when almost as many plays, and features will be broadcast as in peacetime.
