[PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DEATH AT TRAM DEPOT. CHRISTCHURCH, November 19. Thomas Bain, works manager for the Christchurch Tramway Board, was found dead at the foot of a watertower in a yard at the tram depot in Moorhouse Avenue, on Saturday. He had suffered serious head injuries, apparently caused by a fall from the tower. Bain was married, aged 51.

CAR PASSENGER KILLED. AUCKLAND, November 18

Fatal injuries were suffered by John Woods, aged about 21, of Mount Eden, a passenger in the back seat of a motor-car which crashed into a tree late last night in Jervois Road, Ponsonby. He died almost immediately from head injuries. The driver, Reginald Gulliver, and a companion in the front seat, James Henry Gobbitt-Dawson, both members of the Air Force, escaped injury. NEW WHARF AT NAPIER. NAPIER, November 18. An important development in the construction of the deep-sea port at Napier was the opening to-day of the new concrete wharf by the berthage of a large vessel, which was the first to come alongside. This is the first of two concrete wharves for overseas vessels which the Napier Harbour Board is constructing. The completed wharf is one of the most modern in New Zealand. Great public interest is created, but because of the war restrictions there was no public ceremony. AFFRAY ON STEAMER. AUCKLAND, November 20. Suffering from knife wounds, allegedly received during an affray aboard an overseas ship berthed at the Central Wharf, on Saturday night, a fireman, Charles' Hunter, was admitted to hospital. Another member of the crew of the same ship was arrested to-day. The suspect, John Reilly, 52, fireman, was charged' in the Police Court with assaulting Hunter, so as to cause actual bodily harm. Detective-Sergeant Walsh said that at 9 o’clock on Saturday night, Hunter was found in the forecastle, suffering from stab wounds on the head, and concussion. He was taken to hospital, and was progressing favourably. The Detective-Sergeant asked that Reilly be remanded in custody until Wednesday.

Mr Morling, S.M., granted the remand.
