MEAT FOR EXPORT
APPEAL TO FARMERS
[per press association.]
WELLINGTON, November 3
The serious position which will be created if overseas vessels, due to load during the next few weeks, are not fully loaded, was discussed at a meeting of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board to-day. The Board draws the attention of all farmers in the North Island to the situation which will occur if later on they are unable to get their stock killed because of lack of shipping tonnage. In a statement the Board says it must be impressed on farmers that they should make every endeavour to continue the usual practice for deliveries of early lanibs and sheep.(o the freezing works, otherwise some of the tonnage available awaiting to carry meat may have to be diverted elsewhere. Having regard to the experiences of the last war over congestion in freezing stores in the works, the Board has given consideration to whether it is possible to avoid repetition of this trouble.
j “Arrangements have been made for ( ships not only to empty freezing | stores of all last season’s surplus, but also to take the usual new season’s , kill of early lamb and mutton,” the I Board states, “On no account must ’these vessels depart only partly loatl--1 od, and this is a matter to which all j freezing companies, operators, and farmers must give most serious considi eration, to see that all ships which jhave been provided to take early killings of lamb and mutton are fully loaded. In doing this farmers may avoid disappointment over getting their stock away later on through’ lack of shipping tonnage.” The Board points out that with dry ewes it would help the position materially if ewes not intended for future breeders he sent to the freezing works as quickly as possible, thus relieving (he posit io a later on. Apart from the domestic problems of storage, the i.-oard says, there is an obligation on the tarniers part to help the British Govcrnineni by continuing as faj’ as possible the normal flow of meat shipments lo the l.’nited Kingdom. !
