TOWN-PLANNIG SCHEMES
STATEMENT BY MINISTER
[pee press association.]
WELLINGTON, November 2
Regret that because of the war, it had not been possible to bring down legislation to help the work of townplanning, both by the board and by local bodies was expressed by the Minister of Iternal Affairs (Mr. Parry) in an address at a meeting of I he Townplanning Board ro-day. Till the war clouds rolled away, the Minister said, he could only urge that the board use to the fullest extent the machinery of the present leglislation and make such progress in town-plan-ning as was possible in the circumstances.
“Since the board last met model clauses have been released,” said tbe Minister. “These clauses are designed to serve as a guide to local authorities in the preparation of their townplanning schemes. I think the release of these clauses has been the major factor in. speeding up the preparation of schemes and should produce much greater results soon. “[ think that in the past, to many local authorities reference to a townplanning scheme conveyed somewhat of a. nebulous sort of idea, and they could not really visualise what a town-planning scheme meant in everyday life. r rho release of the model clauses has served the purpose of translating the idea, into something they' can associate with their normal municipal functions. The result is that; though the clauses have been out only a comparatively short time, such progress has been made that to-day there are four scheme before the board for provisional approval. 1 think this must be a record.”
