NEWSPRINT COSTS

INCREASE IN BRITAIN [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, October 28. The newspapers have to face a. sharp increase in their costs as the result of a rise in the price of newsprint paper by 95s per ton to £l7 per ton. The “Financial News” says: “The rationing of the pulp supplies would have prevented this increase.” It adds: Responsible people in the industry regard the position as being entirely due to failure by the Government to handle the matter intelligently. There is an abundance of pulp awaiting shipment, but there is a shortage of shipping. The proper method of dealing with supplies of pulp, meanwhile, would be to ration the pulp available, but the Ministry of Supply has not attempted to do so. The pre-war price of newsprint was £ll/5/0 per ton.
