Dictate: .... . The New Zealand Cup candidate Dictate has been on the easy list since returning to Riccarton from 'll entham, and was not taken to Motukarara to-day.

Waitaka: , , >• „ The Robespierre-Mazurka gelding, Waitaka, now owned by Mr C. L. Kettle, has freshened up considerably •after his spell, and has been infusing plenty of dash into his work at Omoto. Waitaka will be raced on the latei days of the Cup meeting at Riccaiton.

Rebellion Back: Rebellion has rejoined the actne brigade at Riccarton, and is in exce lent order to start off on another preparation. This four-year-old gelding, by Robespierre —Miiff had 14 stai & last season for two wins, four seconds, and two thirds, so that he was out ot a place on only six occasions.

Showed Pace: Autolite. one of the few three-yeai-olds by the smart Paper Money horse Autopay, has had only two races, one at Masterton and the other in the Spring Novice at Trentham on Monday last. On each occasion she showed’pace and she should not be long in maiden class.

Fresh Material: Lucullus Lad will probably be taken to Australia by Mr. W r . Devon, who will replace him in A. Jenkins’ stable by a couple of young horses from Australia. This pair arrived this week from Sydney.

Reading: Since Reading rose to fame as the winner of the A.J.C. Derby, the pronunciation of his name has caused several arguments. Reading is from Gravure, a mare from Encre, who was from Linotype, and his name is a participle of the verb “to read.”

Wotan Again: Wotan was one of the interesting runners on Labour Day, when, after a long spell and a short stud season, he reappeared in the Waverley Cup. The 1936 Melbourne Cup winner is reported to have done well at Wanganui and his third in the Waverley Cup, a head and a neck from Hunting Cat, is considered a satisfactory performance.

Penalties: The only horse that has won the New Zealand Cup with a penalty appears to have been Sunart, whose oiiginal weight was increased by 51b in 1924. The greatest amount of overweight carried by a winner is 41b, which increased Frisco’s impost to 7.6 in 1907. Tirailleur, handicapped at 6.5, won with 6.8 in 1889.

A New Zealand Line: Trueness; the winner of the Gimcrack Stakes, traces to a well-known and' successful taproot in the New Zealand Stud Book. She was got by thf Blandford horse Harinero from Truest, and goes back to Pulchra. to whom New Zealand owes Multiform and Cruciform, two of the best ever bred in the Dominion.

Well-related: H. Nurse is training a two-year-old filly by Gascony from the Psychology mare Symballo, and thus a sister to the speedy Sym'cony, half-sister to The Crooner, and a close relative to Catalogue and Cylinder. She is built on solid' lines, and has shown promise in the little sprinting she has done. The filly was purchased as a yearling at Trentham. for 120 guineas by her present owner, Miss Edgar Jones, of Geraldine.

Wellington Taxation: The amount payable in Government taxation by the Wellington Racing Club amounts to £18,798, not including amusement tax, which is expected to approach another £lOOO. Last year the corresponding sum _ (with out amusement tax) was £14,556, made up of totalisator tax, £6906, dividend tax £7553, and stakes tax £96. The previous year it was £13,527, and three years ago it was £11,269.

Sterncliase Arrives: The Lord Quex colt Stenrchase has arrived at Riccarton in charge of Mr G. G. Beatson. This good-looking young horse closely resembles one of the Hunting Song breed, this being brought about by his dam Enchantment being by Hunting Song from Smoko Concert, and so being a sister to Gallant Fox and Ringing Cheer. He is one of the few horses by Lord Quex left entire, and is certainly a most attractive individual. Sterncliase was •entered' for the Spring Plate run at set weights over a mile on the open ing day of the New Zealand Cup meeting, but bis win at Wellington put him out of hacks, and he is not now eligible for that event. Centrepoise, Authoress, and Lady Furst have also arrived from Hastings.

English Yearlings: Five highly-bred English year, mg fililes were landed 1 from England, at Lyttelton this month, and were sent to the Inglewood Stud of Mr Ken | Austin at Rangiora. They are the pro- ( perty of Mr Rundle Brendon, of Two Gates Stud, Essher, England, and will; be offered for sale at Trentham next January. The fillies represent some of the most successful lines of the present day in England. One (illy, by Hie French Derby winner. Pearlweed, introduces avaluable French outcross through her sire, and on her dams side is related' to Royal Minstrel, Hairan. and. other good winners descended from The Empress Maud Carbine blood is represented in the filly by Tommy Atkins, a son of Spion Kop sire of the successful Australian stallion. The Buzzard. The English Derby winner of 1025, Manna, who died 'in England this month, is represented by a bay (illy out of Jacqueline of Hainau, dam of the Wilbraham Stakes winner. Red Eady, and she is a daughter of, the Desmond horse Farasi, the sire of the dam of I rigo and Harinero, both by Blandtoid. whose stock are doing so well in Australia. Son-in-Law blood is again represented in a. (illy by his son. Empire Builder, from Noneen Rliu, who is a

'winner producer and a very attrac-tively-bred mare running back to Feronia, the third dam of the stallion, Valais. The shipment landed in excellent order. WHANGAREI RACES. NEXT WEEK’S FIELDS. MELBOURNE NOTES. MELBOURNE, October 27. High Caste and Gold Salute are both fit for the Cox Plate at the Moonee Valley Racing Club’s meeting to-mor-row. The event is overshadowing the Moonee Valley Cup in public interest. The track is excellent, and there is a possibility of a new record. The Trentham trainer, T. R. George, expects Beau Vite to improve on his recent forip, but is not confident of beating the other pair. Catalogue has never been better. Keen judges suggest that the veteran is capable of causing an upset. Te Hero, who is an acceptor for the Dundonald Handicap, is the fastest horse in the field, but uncertainty at the barrier may jeopardise his chance. The Brisbane jockey, J. Conquest, has arrived and will ride Billposter in the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup. M. McCarten will ride Catalogue, F. Shean Gold Salute, E. Bartie High Caste, and W. Cook Beau Vite in the Cox Plate. McCarten will ride Mildura and Ashley Reed Temple Coyn in the Phoenix Handicap. New Zealand horses engaged in minor events to-morrow are: St. Albans Handicap, Flashlight, by Tidal; Steeplechase, Cape Morn; Dundonald Handicap, Te Hero, National; Phoenix Handicap, Crojick, Bankshaw, Royal Order and Companion.

Trotting MEETINGS TO COME October 28— Invercargill. Nov. 7,9, 10—N.Z. Metropolitan, Nov, 23, 25—Forbury Park, Cup Favourites: Early favourites for the New Zealand Cup are Fine Art, Lucky Jack, and Lawn Derby. The last-named is on his way to New Zealand, and on arrival at Addington will lie quartered at Edinburgh Lodge. Kewpie’s Crown: The three-year-old by Ringtrue from Kcwpie has been named Kewpie’s Crown, and is the ninth progeny of the mare registered, retaining the sequence of the Kewpie nomenclature. Unlike the others of the family, Kewpie’s Crown is a trotter. Mongolian: Mongolian, who won a double at Auckland on the second day, was got by Grattan Loyal from 'Wild Pointer, by Wildwood Junior from Bonista, an imported mare by Star Pointer. Mongolian won in 3.20 2-5 and in 4.26, travelling faster in the second win than Bayard put up in the principal race of the day. Mongolian is owned by Mr. W. S. Clarke. Inangahua Junction, and is trained by F. Berkelt.

Betting Systems: The “Forbury” system of betting can provide some strange results. In the Redcastle Handicap at Oamaru, Loyal Roy's backers just received their money back for second on the “win” machine, but more than doubled it on the place totalisator. The investments in many cases (says the “Timaru Herald”) indicated a pronounced preference by some stables for the 75-25 method.
