WESTPORT AERDROME
EXTENSION ORDERED AVESTPORT. October 27. Instructions for extending the new Westport aerodrome were given, today by Mr. Semple, Minister for Public Works. The aerodrome is now only a landing ground, in effect being confined to a strip half a mile long and four chains wide in a south-westerly direction. A good strike of grass and clover has been made on the. aerodrome, but in certain -winds the landing of the machines is dangerous. A big area adjoining the ground has been reserved to make an aerodrome of a size for use by the biggest machines. Large quantities of filling are needed and it was planned to fill when the proposed new dredge began -work, as lhe spoil is not obtainable within an economic distance. The order for the dredge has been held up because tenders from England -was considered too high and the war has since broken out. A carryall tractor, Air. Semple decided, will be transferred from Grey Valley to level a new strip, of the same, size but at an angle to the present ground. Cnee begun the work is expected to occupy six weeks, after which grass sowing will have to be done.
