Atrens: „ _ _ The two-year-old colt by Beau Pete from Helen Hunt in J. Tomkinson’s stable, has had the name of Atrens claimed for him. A Poor Innings: The South Island won one race at the Wellington meeting, the hurdle race on the second day, with Esperance Bay. Its representation was smaller than usual, but it was also much weaker. Cup Trials: According to a Wellington writer, impressive trials for the New Zealand Cup witnessed during the Wellington meeting were those of Yours Truly, Lady Furst, Centrepoise, and Arctic King, and others who ran well enough to give them prospects were Tooley Street, Capricious, Peerless, Siegmund, Lowenberg and Wagner. Globe Trotter; ‘Many Stewards’ Handicaps have been won from the back with lightning challenges along the outside of | the leaders. No horse impressed at| Trentham as a better type for such a victory this year than Globe Trotter, who put in two remarkable late efforts in his races. An Attractive Celt: The two-year-old colt Pleading, who has been in the Inglewood’ Stud spelling for some months, has rejoined the Chokebore team at Riccarton. He is an attractive and well-grown bay two-year-old by Solicitor General from Eulalie, and was bred by his owner, Mr George Macdonald, at Lowry Hills, Cheviot.
Related to Pharlap: A most interesting candidate in the Okain’s Trial Stakes at Motukarara to-morrow will be Hamway, who is. a three-year-old gelding by Iliad from Entreaty, the dam of Pharlap. The gelding is trained by J. Young, better known as the mentor of Icevus and Co., in the light harness sport, W'ho was recently granted a license to train gallopers.
Inglewood Foalings: Foalings at Mr K. Austin’s new' Inglewood Stud include the following:—Royal Bay, a chestnut colt to Solicitor General; Cyrillian, a bay colt to Solicitor General; Cupid’s Bow', a hay colt to Solicitor General; Lady Burleigh, a bay filly to Solicitor General; Miss Night Raid, a bay colt to Paladin; Gold Paper, a bay colt to Paladin; Privet, a bay filly to Guarantee and Chiefava, a bay colt to Solicitor General.
By Hunting Song: Against Centrepoise winning the New Zealand Cup is the fact that Hunting Song has never sired a twomiles winner on the flat, though Gaine Carrington, Hunting Cry and others would undoubtedly have Avon at that distance had they been specially prepared for it. After all, Centrepoise is bred from a Limond mare and her dam was by a St. Simon horse. Centrepoise is a hardy sort who will go on improving and he has the heart to carry him a long way towards 1 success. Novices at Motnkarara: Several little known horses will contest the Okain’s Trial Stakes at Motukarara to-morrow. Coup d’Etat is a three-year-old gelding by Nightmarch from Niazone, owned by Mr A. Louisson, and Omapo is a three-year-old gelding by Niglitmarch from Azalea, thus a brother to Haerepo, both being trained by P. Mason, who bred and owns Omapo. Kilcato is a three-year-old gelding by Pink Coat from Kilris, and is trained for Mr P. Campbell by C. Davey; Sweet Mystery is a three-year-old filly by Lord Warden from Satisfy, and is trained by F. D. Jones for Mr C. Holdsworth; The Dictator is a three-year-old gelding by Night. Raid from Ma Mie, and is trained for Mrs M. H. Tripp, of South Canterbury, by F. Roberts, and Puella is a two-year-old filly (the only one of her age in the race) by Bulandsar from Monette, dam of Centrepoise, and is trained by H. Davies for Mr R. L. McCormack, of New Brighton.

NEW ZEALAND CUP. FINAL PAYMENTS. CHRISTCHURCH, October 27. After final payments at 5 p.m. yesterday, and the elimination of two entries by the programme committee of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club, 12 horses remain in the New Zealand Cup race of two miles, to be run at the club’s meeting at Addington on Tuesday, November 7. The final payment was not made for two entries, and the club, in the conditions governing the race, reserved the right to select its own field from the nominations received. When the final payments were made, the twm Auckland-owned horses, King’s Warrior and Ironside,, were the only defections, and this left a field of 14. Later, last evening, the programme committee of the club met and decided to eliminate from the list Pot Luck and Renown’s Best, both trained by M. Holmes. This leaves a field of 12 horses and 10 betting chances on the totalisator, as Lucky Jack and Parisienne and Cantata and Blair Athol will be bracketed on the machine. Little fault can be found with the committee’s decision, for neither Pot Luck nor Renown’s Best would have strengthened what is regarded as one of the best-balanced fields ever paraded for New' Zealand’s most important race. The field now' is: — New Zealand Cup Handicap, of £2.600; 4.25 class; two miles: Colonel Gratian, Cantata, Plutus, Fine Art, Rocks Ahead, Marsceres, Gallant Knight scr, Blair Athol 12, Lucky Jack, King’s Play 24, Parisienne, Lawn Derby 36.
