ALLEGED “PERSECUTION”
STRONG PROTEST IN COURT. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, October 27. “I wish to make the strongest protest that this charge should have been brought at all. It is a scandalous instance of a prosecution developing into persecution,” declared counsel in the Magistrate’s Court, to-day, when William Connor was charged with supplying false information. After hearing evidence, Mr Levvey, S.M., dismissed the charge, saying that it revealed a very grave omission in the regulations. Sub-Inspector Packer said Connor was involved in an accident, on April 26, and on July 11, was convicted .on a charge of failing to give way. Later, he was involved in an accident in which a man was killed, and made a voluntary statement to the police. In this, he said he had been driving 14 years and had never had an accident.
Counsel said Connor was under no obligation to give the information, and could only answer questions to the best of his ability. He submitted there was no case to answer. The case wa.s dismissed.
