A HEAVY BUFFETING
LINER ALMOST FOUNDERS. [BY CABLE —PBESS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.] NEW YORK, October 21. The liner, President Harding, has arrived. Seventy-two of her passengers were taken to hospital, they havingbeen injured when a gigantic wave struck the ship when it was combating a 110-niile-an-hour hurricane. The liner almost foundered. A steward dragged to safety seven who were swept from the promenade deck, and thrown under a. lifeboat. Forty passengers were hurt when a mass of water poured into a smoking room. Furniture, lighting fixtures, and passengers were tossed in a heap. Six of the crew were engulfed in the poop, one being lost overboard. BRITISH SHIP ABANDONED. . MANILA, October 21. A British vessel, the New Mathilde, wirelessed for assistance when she began to founder, after heavy seas had shifted her cargo. The New Mathilde gave her location as in the China Sea, near Hong Kong. The British coaster Soochow rescued the crew, who had taken to the boats.
