MILITIAMAN’S DEATH
REVELATIONS AT INQUEST. LONDON. August 23. Evidence that a militialman who had twice been passed as fit for the army died of tuberculosis after a I month’s training was given at. an inquest held at Waterloo. Lancs., last night on Thomas Carroll, 21, of Ncwsam Street, Liverpool. Carroll collapsed and died while drilling with his squad from Seaforth Ba rracks. It was stated in evidence that Carroll had been passed Grade 1 by the Medical Board of Civilian Doctors, and passed again as fit by the depot medical officer. While drilling he collapsed, and a post-mortem examination showed that his left lung was badly affected by tuberculosis. Recording a verdict of death from natural causes in accordance with the medical evidence, the deputy coroner, Mr R. IV. Brighouse, said: “I have no doubt someone will take this up with the Medical Board. It comes as a great shock to me to think that a young man can be passed Grade 1 into the Army and within a. month die of tuberculosis. “IJ<! was iotally unlit to be passed ‘for the Army, and 1 am surprised the ijK iJical examinations did not disclase I be state "f tuberculosis.”
