PERSONAL NOTES

Dr. A. H. Berry left for Wellington by this morning’s air service. Mrs. J. J- Anisy returned yesterday form Christchurch. Miss M. Porter arrived yesterday, from Christchurch. Mr. W. Boucher will leave to-mor-row, for Christchurch, where his marriage to Miss J. C. Laing will take place on Saturday. A Sydney cablegram stated that the death occurred at Bondi yesterday of a well-known landscape painter, Mr. Elioth Gruner. He was a pative of Gisborne, where his married sister resides. A Sydney cablegram reported that yesterday the retirement was announced of Mr. H. Hamilton, Chairman of Directors of the Vacuum Oil Company, and formerly the company’s manager for New Zealand. Mr. R. Breed, Public Works Department clerk, Wanganui, has received notice of transfer to the Greymouth staff of the Department, to succeed Mr L. R. Pedrotti, recently transferred to Christchurch. A Press Association message from Auckland reported the death of Mr. James Samuel Dickinson, ■ M.P. for Parnell from 1911 to 1928.- He increased his majority at every election, until he was defeated by Mr. H. R. Jenkins.

The wedding took pGce at Christchurch, on Saturday, of Lesley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. O’Callaghan, of Greymouth, and Arnold, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. Beck, also of Greymouth. Mr. and Mrs. A. Beck returned yesterday, from Christchurch.

For the fourth successive year, Mr. T. Pound, of the Lands and Survey Department, Wellington, has been elected President of the Public Service Association. Messrs E. D. Sinclair (Education Department), and G. A. Hayden (State Fire Office) were elected vice-presidents.—Press Assn

Rt. Rev. H. St.. Barbe Holland, Bishop of Wellington, has decided to return to New Zealand at an early opportunity, according to advice received bv the Vicar-General, Ven. Archdeacon W. Bullock. The Bishop expects to arrive in Wellington late next mouth, or early in December.

At last evening’s meeting of the executive of the Grey Branch of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) motions of sympathy were carried with the relatives of three members of the branch who have died recently, Messrs W. H. Rathbun, J. Fitzgerald, and G. McLennan.

The death occurred at Dunedin this morning, of Mr. Felix James Donnelly, a native of Matakanui, Central Otago, aged 73 years. Deceased resided in Central Otago for the greater part of his. life, engaging in gold-min-ing and farming. For the past 20 years he had lived in Dunedin. In his youth, the late Mr. Donnelly was a noted athlete, being well-known as. a sprinter and a footballer. He is survived by his wife, four sons, Felix (Auckland),. George (Wellington), Lex (Greymouth), anf Vincent (Dunedin), and one daughtex, Mis 3 Mary Donnelly (Dunedin).

Superintendent J. Lander, of Wanganui, will retire from the Police Force at the end of this month. ' He joined the force in Palmerston North in 1899. He was stationed in Foxton before going to Napier, after which he had charge of Te Awamutu for eight years. In 1915 he was appointed sectional sergeant in Auckland, and in 1921 he was promoted to senior sergeant and transferred to Wellington, where he was promoted to the rank of sub-inspector. In 1930 he was promoted to the rank of inspector attached to headquarters staff as relieving inspector throughout the Dominion. He was promoted to superintendent at the beginning of this year and, as he was close to retirement, remained in charge of the Wanganui district instead of moving to a- metropolitan centre. Superintendent Lander accompanied the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York on their tours of the Dominion, and in recognition of his services on those tours was awarded the Royal Victorian Medal.
