John Douglas McQueen, 30, married, employed as a farm manager, who was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital on Tuesday with severe injuries to his head, died in the hospital this afternoon. McQueen, whose home was at Holmes Bay, Banks Peninsula, was found lying on the road and it appeared that he had either been thrown or had fallen from his horse. COOK STRAIT AIRWAYS. WESTPORT, October 12. The Cook Strait Airways service, which was expected to discontinue running on a full scale on October 15, when it was stated the Government was expected to commandeer some of the aeroplanes, will now continue to operate on the Wellington, Nelson. Greymouth, and Westport run until November 10. From that date the service will operate an amended timetable. FATAL CYCLING ACCIDENT. NAPIER, October L 3. Injuries sustained w’hen an acciuent occurred in Napier, yesterday, resulted in the death in hospital, this morning of John Boyd, a middle-aged man. Boyd was cycling down a steep incline in Goldsmith Road, when a tyre blew out.. He lost control of the machine, which ran over a bank. Boyd was thrown into the backyard of a house below' the road. His injuries included concussion, spinal injury, and partial paralysis. An inquest will be held.

CONVERSION OF CARS. WELLINGTON, October 13. Breaking from the Earracks while on military service at Buckle Street, James Alexander Kennedy, 20, clerk, and Malcolm Charles Ferguson, 21, packer, unlawfully converted ;t car valued at £305. Kennedy, who was stated by the police, to be on probation for a conversion charge arising from an accident in which two young women were killed, also admitted two other charges of conversion. He was sent to Borstal for two years. The po lice remarked that it was his ninth appearance before the Court. Ferguson was ordered to come up for sentence if called within 12 months. NEW PLYMOUTH AIRPORT NEW PLYMOUTH, October 12. The Minister of Public Works (Mr. Semple), v.isited New Plymouth airport to-day, during a tour of inspection of military training centres being constructed by the Department. “We are ahead of schedule with everything everywhere.” said the Minister, when commenting on the Department’s efforts. All records for construction had been broken, and anything ever done overseas was equalled as the result of the mechanisation and organisation of the Department, which had to undertake 750 jobs and cover 3,000,000 square feet with timber. Mr. Semple praised the foresight of the New Plymouth Borough Council in acquiring the land and forming the aerodrome. Had New Zealand not had aerodromes prepared, insuperable difficulties would have been faced when the call tor trained aviators was made.
