MELBOURNE NOTES. BEAU VITE IMPRESSES. [by CABLE —PEESB ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.] MELBOURNE, October 11. Perfect Idea and Philwirth made a poor showing in their respective races at Geelong to-day. Beau Vite has done well since his arrival in Melbourne. His appearance has greatly impressed keen judges, who regard the colt as an excellent Derby and Cup prospect. Cooranga arrived to-day on a special mission for the Melbourne Cup. The horse Greenwich, owned by the Duke of Kent, has arrived in Melbourne, and has joined J. Holt’s team. Catalogue’s scratching from the Caulfield Cup enables F. Shean to ride Buzalong. H. Badger will pilot Geebung in the Toorak Handicap and the Cup. Ajax is still an absentee from the Caulfield tracks. He picked up a nail some weeks ago, and the injury is more serious than was at first thought. Ajax is a doubtful runner at the Caulfield meeting.

' Trotting meetings to comb October 14 —Manawatu T.C. October 21, 23— Greymouth. October 21, 23, or 25—Auckland. October 23—Oamaru. . October 28— Wellington. October 28— Invercargill. Nov. 7,9, 10—N.Z. Metropolitan. Nov. 23, 25—Forbury Park. Moira Bingen: . L. F. Berkett has nominated Moira Bingen and "Lpyalette for the Greymouth Spring meeting. Moira Bingen is an eight-year-old mare by Worthy Bingen—Native Wattle, and last season when trained by E. R. Smith, Hamilton, won one race in eight starts. From Black’s Point: Carrageen, the ten-year-old Wrack —Erin’s Logan gelding who has been nominated for the Greymouth meeting this month, is now trained by H. Miller, of .Black’s Point. Last season, when owned by C. M. Archer and trained by E. Carlyon, Carrageen won one race, and ran third once in five start. Both placings were at Nelson in January last. Lawn Derby: According to a Sydney cablegram, Lawn Derby will leave for New Zealand at the end of this month for the Christchurch trotting meeting. His stablemate, Springfield Globe, will make his first trip to New Zealand at Christmas, for the Auckland Cup. Four Entrants:

The New Brighton trainer, G. Cameron, has nominated three pacers and one unhoppled trotter for the Greymouth meeting, this month. The trotter* is the maiden Windsor Lad, and the pacers Stylish Boy (a speedy sprinter and a previous winner on the course), Elite Rey and Sailor’s Hornpipe.

Lawn Derby’s Handicap: Lawn Derby has been handicapped on 4.22 for : the New Zealand Cup, and will be asked to give away 36 yards. In last year’s race the Australian pacer was handicapped on 4.21, and was set to give away 60 yards. Parisienne last year received 12 yard's from Lawn Derby, but, having won a race in the meantime, she now meets him on even terms.

Back Again: Some' two seasons ago, L. A. Maidens, of Winchmore, dropped out of the game as an active trainer, but he is back in the field with Palomar and King’s Jubilee, who have been nominated for the Greymouth meeting. Maidens was a good patron of the Greymouth trots, and has won his share of races on Victoria Park. Palomar is a speedy but unreliable pacer, formerly trained by R. B. Berry. He is a five-yearmld gelding by Grattan Loyal—Childwood. Jubilee is a five-year-old gelding by Jack Potts —Pearlie Chimes. He did not race last season, but in the previous term won two races, and ran three seconds and two thirds. . '

Shutting the Door: The Metropolitan Trotting Club has placed itself in a rather unenviable position by inviting nominations lor the Trotting Cup, and, after owners have responded, by power of elimination, can shut the door in the face of their invited guests. The conditions attached to the race read: “Notwithstanding payments for nominations and acceptances having been made, the committee reserves the right to select the horses which shall go to the post, the selections to be made immediately after final payments have been made. Donald Dhu’s entry for the Trotting Cup ha.d to be rejected 1 , but he is now eligible for any race in which 4.27 is the qualification.
