BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. |OUK UW.N COKUEBPONDENT.J HOKITIKA, September 18. At a meeting of the Hokitika Blough Council, there were present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. G. Heinz, C. Callari, D. P. Stuart, J. Fox, .1. L. '1 urner, 1< Freitas. Apologies lor absence were received from Crs. 11. 1 • Parry, A. It. Elcock, and \V. H. Stopforth. . Financial statement: Receipts £J3i 4/7; expenditure £1139/2/10. Accounts amounting to £B5l/19/11 were passed for payment. The Hokitika Harbour Board wrote, stating that, in regard to the Hood danger through the deposits of gravel across the river entrance, the Harbour Board had approached the Member for Westland for a copy or loan of the plan of the proposed work to remove the blockage from the mouth of the Hokitika River. The New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Ltd., advised that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during August: 113 sheep, 9 pigs. The Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch, advised, in reply to the Council’s inquiry whether the water from tho Council’s well-bore was likely to have any effect on hot water systems, that the samples of water had been submitted to the Government Analyst, who reported that the amount of iron in the borough well water was small, and would not be a source of trouble. Addisons, Hokitika, applied for permission to replace the existing verandah at their shop in Hamilton Street with a verandah of the suspended type.—Granted. The Hokitika Fire Brigdae advised that there are no indicators to mark the position of fire plugs in Park and Jollie Streets, and also at Mr D. PStuart’s in Stafford Street, and suggesting that where the roads are tarsealed a white circle should be painted around the fire plugs in order that they may be easily located—lt was decided to carry out the suggestions. The Westland County Council’s application for permission to instal a septic tank at the new County office was granted, subject to Health regulations.

Mrs M. A. Ridland’s complaint about the unsatisfactory condition of Weld Street fronting her property was referred to the Works Committee. Mr A. J. Marshall’s complaint that surface water from the ‘Gibson Quay footpath overflows on to his section, was referred to the Works’ Committee. The Hokitika Beautifying Association wrote asking the Council to discourage the erection of . cottages in North Revell Street, on the beach side, as it is felt that the erection of such buildings in this area, if allowed to continue, will not be for the improvement of the sea front. The Association also drew attention to the drain at the corner of Stafford and Brittan Streets and Hampden and Davie Streets, and suggested that improvements be effected. —It was decided in regard to the first request that no action be taken, and that the second be referred to the Works’ Committee.

The application of Mr M. E. Spiers for permission to erect a septic tank at his premises in Weld Street was granted, subject to the Health regulations. A complaint by Mr E. V. Hughes regarding the road in front of his house in Bealey Street was referred to the Works’ Committee. Abattoirs’ report:—Stock slaughtered in August:—33 cows, 41 heifers, 65 bullocks, 306 sheep, 17 pigs, 7 calves, Condemned, 2 cows, 1 sheep. Fees collected for month amounted to £77 IS/-, compared with £69/6/- for August last year. The Traffic Inspector reported on traffic offences for July and August, and suggested that in view of the satisfactory working of the traffic requirements, reports should be furnished 1 only when anything of moment occurred. —The suggestion was approved.

Cr. Turner produced photographs of parts of the town, where he considered the ratepayers’ money was being frittered away by the Council continually doing temporary work instead of permanent work.—A special meeting of the Works Committee was called for Saturday next to inspect. It was decided to enforce the bylaw relating to the cutting back of trees overhanging the footpaths. It was resolved to draw the attention of the Railway authorities to the danger of cyclists riding down the ramps of the overhead bridge in Stafford Street.
