Generals Smuts and Hertzog were both members of a Coalition Government formed in 1933; General Hertzog’s Nationalist and General Smuts’ South African Parties hold 109 of the 150 seats in the House. General Smuts’ supporters favour tile severance of relations with Germany, while the Opposition, consisting of Dr. Malan’s New Nationalists (otherwise Republican) Party, which holds 27 seats, voted for General Hertzog.
