Work by the contractor.-the Williamson Construction Company, on the construction of the eight-storey State building on Jean Batten place, Auckland, which has just started, has been suspended temporarily by arrangement with the Government. This has been done so that the company may use all its resources in. men on defence work undertaken for the Gov: eminent. The company has just completed a cannery and. freezing block at the Westfield meat freezing works, and this week was in a. position to start construction on a large scale at Jean Batten place. v .
That provision be made in. school curricula for the teaching -of manners was advocated by the Mayor of Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis, when tendering a civic reception to delegates attending the sixth annual national conference of; the Dominion Federation of School Committees’ Associations of New Zealand. “Manners maketh man,” quoted the Mayor, who said that it was important for children to receive a sound grounding in an aspect of citizenship that would stand them in material stead in later years and which would reinforce home training.
Unusual keenness in his desire to serve his country was shown by a returned soldier at Ashburton this week. He was more than 60 years of age and showed good health . and an active body in spite of his. age. Inquiries through the usual channels met with a refusal for admission to active service because of the man’s age. He caused some surprise among the authorities when he gripped the table before, him and swung himself up to poise on his hands with his head resting on the table, in an endeavour to convince officials of his ability to serve.
Formal approval of a proposal that pilots be provided for motorists visiting Wellington during the exhibition has' been given by the executive cl” the Automobile Association (Wellington). The suggestion wq.s contained in a, letter from the Wairarapa that chauffeurs'be provided to drive visiting motorists’ cty's through the city. The secretary (Mr. AV. A. Sutherland) said that such services were provided in Sydney, Melbourne, and London. If approval, were /given investigations could be made. The chairman (Mr. E. A. Batt) said that before the association committed itself it. should wait a!nd see what the atmosphere would be like at the time of the exhibition. There ntight not be the crowds that had been expected.
