N.Z. EXHIBITION

. • i, CENTENNIAL COUNCIL MEETS. — A meeting of the Council of the Westland Provincial Organisation of the New Zealand Centennial, held in the Greymouth Borough. Council Chambers, last evening, was attended by Messrs G. A. Perry (chairman), F. A. Kitchingham, J. Ryall, J. Mulcare, J. Murdoch, J. Unwin, W. B. Gilbert, H. Herring, W. Clayton, P. J. McLean and D. J. Evans (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs A. H. McKane, K. May (Ross) and Dr. W. McKay. The Centennial Branch of the Department of Internal Affairs wrote, supplying particulars of uniforms, bunting, etc.; for celebrations; ; also asking to be advised of the’ names of auditors of Centennial accounts in the several districts.—The secretary was requested to supply the necessary'information. The Secretary of the Dominion Court, Wellington, wrote asking to be supplied' with particulars of furniture required for the reception rooms.—Mr Evans said this matter had been attended to. Mr E. R. Darracott, Kotuku, headmaster of the Kotuku School, wrote regarding a visit to the school in order to arrange about an exhibit. —11 was decided that the visit be made.

Mr W .A. Service, Canterbury Education Board, wrote agreeing to act in conjunction with the scholarship com-mittee,-and also as judge along with Dr. McKay, for the photographic competition.—The secretary said there were 51 entries in the photographic competition; which would be judged almost immediately. The matter of the appointment of a reception officer for the West Coast section at the Exhibition was referred to the secretary for attention. The secretary was instructed to proceed to Wellington and attend to numerous details requiring attention prior to the opening of the Exhibition.

The secretary submitted' the following statement Of finance as at August 31, 1939:—Receipts: June 30: Balance collected to' date £1,823/5/-; August 31, Centennial scholarship—Local bodv payments £2lO, “Old Westland” £5/16/3; total £2039/1/3. Payments: June 30—Payments to date £1,444 4/3, model expenses £lO, “Old Westland” £22/11/9, credit balance at banks £2,039/1/3. The Scholarships Fund stands at £555/7/6 and the subsidy which has accrued totals £lB5 2/6. Further payments and subsidy anticipated are £125, providing a grand total of £865/10/-. General Account: Credit balance at bank £7 2/9, local body contributions £668 2/-; estimated Government subsidy £125, total £BOO. Liabilities totalled £BOO, comprising balance on spice £3OO, subsidy on printing £25, photographic competition £3O, exhibition expenses, fitting and lighting £5O : show cases £25, picture framing £lO, reception room and caretaking £75, travel booking £25, printing labels and showcards £lO, general £55, total £250, contingency for publications £195. The statement was approved. *.A grant of £25 was made to the South Island Travel Association. The Centennial Branch, Department of Internal Affairs, forwarded particulars of timber production in Grey and Westland Counties since 1929 (total last year 74,114,292 sup. ft.).
