WILL HELP GOVERNMENT, i , [FEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, September 6. 1 “The Opposition endorses the Government’s actions in taking its stand by the side of the Mother Country in the declaration of war. against aggiession,” said the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Hamilton) in a statement issued to-night after a caucus of members of his party to-day. “The Opposition will continue to give its help and co-operation in the Government’s efforts to attain the objective sought—the winning of the war,” Mr Hamilton said. “This is the
hour to remember the slogan, which . fired the patriotism of the men and women of this country 25 years ago—‘To the last man and the last shilling. ‘‘The Government asked for a week’s adjournment to allow it to review the situation and draw up proposals for future action,” said Mr Hamilton. “In this we readily acquiesced. It is understood that during the adjournment the Government wil decide on legislative and administrative requirements to meet the new obligations into which we have entered'. ■ .. „ “Many persons will find the time of waiting irksome and anxious, and will' want to know what is expected of .them,” Mr Hamilton added. “It is clearly an occasion for generous help and much sacrifice on the part of an citizens. Each in his own way can serve, whether it be in personal seivice or in contribution. There is much work to be done, and the people individually and collectively can help in conserving the nation’s resources. We urge our people to action in taking their full part in building up our military units, and our essential lood ’ requirements, both for this country and' for the armies and peoples o’ • Britain and her allies. Each and all - can make an immediate contribution • to the country’s needs. This is the basis of national duty. In this spirit and in these terms, the Opposition is ■ asking the National Party to direct its > efforts.”
CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE OFFER
WELLINGTON, September 7. The Associated Chambers of Commerce have written to Mr. Fraser giving an assurance of their determination to do all in their power to assist the Government in organising and using, to the fullest extent, all the resources of the Dominion to aid In prosecuting the war to a. successful conclusion, and offering assistance to the Government in the matter of framing any regulations affecting the carrying on of industry and commerce, /which the Government may deem necessary.
