TO ASSIST SOLDIERS
HASTINGS ORGANISATION. [PEB PEESS ASSOCIATION.] HASTINGS, September 7. Support for the establishment of a Soldiers’ Assistance Association, or some such body, was given at a wellattended meeting of, representatives of local bodies, at Hastings, yesterday. It was decided to approach the authorities, offering co-operation in such a project, and to this end a committeecomprising representatives of all bodies, was set up. Men, who enlist for national service, will have their affairs safeguarded by such an organisation. This body will operate in collaboration with othei bodies, which include the Wai Relief Association and the Returnee Soldiers' Association. It was also de cided to siny Rssistnnco inunc dlately required by men who were al ready’ engaged in national service. A third resolution passed stated “This meeting of representatives o' the Hastings' Chamber of Commerci
and other bodies desires to express the assurance that, if and when, in the opinion of the Government, it becomes necessary to establish a national organisation to provide help for men who may be engaged in national service in regard to- the management or conduct of farms, businesses, or affairs during their absence, those present, and those whom they represent pledge themselves to co-operate fully with the Government, and to do all in their power to, further such an object.” ' .xv A copy of the resolution is to be sent to "the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defence.
