WRESTLING

WRIGHT DEFEATS JONES. ! ■» — [FEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] INVERCARGILL, September 5. After a wrestling contest that was by no means spectacular, Rube Wright defeated Paul Jones to-night. Each had secured a fall when Jones was disqualified’ in the seventh round for punching; mccready v. jones. Paul Jones, the world’s finest exponent of the hook scissors, will be seen in action in Greymouth on Friday next, when he will be opposed by Earl McCready, the British Empire champion, this match, by, any token, -bpjjig nnp. .of_th.e_mpst. important that has ever been staged’ on the ' West Coast. These two men are among the likely contenders for the bouts arising out of the visit of Jim Londos and the finding of the New Zealand and Australasian-’ champions for 1939. McCready as the prime favourite among the importatlQns during the past four

or five years, is in keen demand from one end of the country to the other, and consequently it is only on rare occasions that there is an opportunity for him to come to Greymouth. Nevertheless, followers of the sport in this district know as well as any others that, there are few, if any, better wrestlers in the world, and consequently his appearances are welcome. Like McCready, Jones has for some years held a prominent place among the world’s wrestlers, and this has been due not only to his all-round ability, but also to the damaging use which he makes of his specialty hold, the hook scissors. Although some victims of the hold have managed to escape by edging their way under the ropes, no wrestler has yet succeeded in breaking it, and it is always a most dangerous attacking weapon. Jones, however, is by no means restricted to the hook scissors. He has ill Hio holds in the game at his comtand, using them with consummate irtistry. 6ft in height and weighing about 17 stone, he has nothng to fear from McCready’s size, and lis liking for rugged measures will be is troublesome to his opponent as it rill bo diverting to the spectators.
