| DOMINION TOURNAMENT I [speciai, TO “STAB,”] I INVERCARGILL, August. 24. The West Coast loam had two good 1 wins OU the first day of the New Zea- ' land basketball tournament, which I was field in perfect weather. Had the West Coast forwards been more conisisfent in shooting, the margins would have been much greater. The West (.'oast team was too experienced for I Otago Minor, who were competing at their first tournament. The Coast team played an attractive game, being much ' improved since earlier representative fixtures. The team began nervously against Hokitika, the latter netting three times before Coast opened theiri account. West Coast then settled] down and at. half time the score wasi eleven to six in Coast’s favour. The j second spell was very fast, Coast having definitely the better of the game to ' run out winners by 24 to 8. The team’ is fit and well and is settling down i into a good combination. I The following were the results: — First Grade Canterbury' 16 defeated Hawke’s Bay 15. Southland 14 defeated Wellington 13. Auckland 23 defeated Otago 9. Second Grade South Canterbury' 23 defeated Wan rarapa 11. f Southland Minor 12 defeated Waikato 9.

Splendid team work gave the West Coast an early advantage in the game against Temuka, the defence intercepting .well while the speedy centres quickly transferred the ball to the forwards. The half-time score was eight to two. The pace slackened in the second spell when West Coast scored "seven goals to their opponent’s six. To-morrow West Coast meets Wanganui who are also unbeaten.
