WORK ON WEST COAST
MEN FROM CHRISTCHURCH. [ijIPEOIAL TO “bTAR.”J WELLINGTON, August. 21. Work for 500 Christchurch men who are at. present without employment, because of the closing down of seasonal industries, is to be found in Canterbury and on the West Coast. This statement was made by the Minister of Labour (Mr Webb), at the conclusion of a Cabinet meeting this evening. The Minister is still a patient in Lewisham Hospital, returning there to-night, following a busy day transacting official business at Parliament Buildings. Mr Webb said that Ministers and heads of departments had. met- this afternoon, to arrange emplcymenl of an asset-creating value, :.o which) these seasonal workers now without ! employment could be drafted. Al little time would have to elapse before all the men could be provided with work, as it was first necessary to provide accommodation for them. It was necessary for men living in towns to accept positions in the country, where useful work was available.
