N.Z. POLICE COMMISSIONER
VISIT TO AUSTRALIA

WELLINGTON, July 18
The Commissioner of Police (Mr. D. J. Cummings) will leave for Australia at the end of this week to attend a conference of Commissioners of Police of the Australian States, which will open at Brisbane on July 21. In making this announcement ' this evening, the Minister in charge of the Police Department (Mr. Fraser) said that various matters effecting police administration would be discussed. Similar conferences had been held previously in Australia, the last in Melbourne two years ago; but this would be the first occasion on which New Zealand had been represented. “While in Australia,” the Minister said, “Mr. Cummings will take the op’portunity of visiting Melbourne and Sydney, as well as Brisbane, and will study police methods i nthose cities in the prevention, investigation, and detection of crime, as well as the organisation and working of the detective and uniform branches of the police forces. Another matter in which the commissioner will be interested is the organisation and duties of wom n n police in the Australian States, particularly in view of the fact that the appointment of women police in New Zealand is now under consideration.”
Mr. Fraser said that the radio equipment of police patrol cars would also be closely investigated by the commissioner.
