“The small proportion of New Zealanders who return to the Dominion after studying in England is regarded as fantastic by- university people there,” said Dr. J. A. AV. Bennett, formerly- of Auckland, who, after a brilliant career at Oxford University, arrived at Auckland by the Mataroa on Saturday to spend two months in this country. During his stay. Dr. Bennett, who is now a. Fellow of Queen’s College, Oxlord. will lecture on medieval literature, chiefly ui Auckland University College. It could not. be expected that. New Zealand should absorb all scholars who went overseas into academic posts. Dr. Bennett said. In England. however, a university training was considered to fit a man for important administrative work, and (he cream of Oxford students went each year into the civil service. There was a very definite need for reorganisation in the civil service in New Zealand to make provision foy the entry- both of students returning from abroad and of those vho had studied in (he Dominion.—Press Assn.
