GOLD-DREDGE BURNT

ESTIMATED DAMAGE £3,000

[PER press association.]

INVERCARGILL. July Ifi

A gold dredge, owned by Mr. J. A. S. Aitken, of Gore, and situated in the Chatton district, was .completely destroyed by fire early this morning. The dredge was not insured, and Mr. Aitken is a heavy‘loser, the damage being estimated at £3,000. It is understood that the fireman removed the fire on Saturday night in preparation for cleaning out the boiler, and it is thought that a spark from this fire caused the outbreak. The dredge was burnt to the level of the water before it sank.

The dredge is not lying in very deep water, but Mr. Aitken considers it would cost. £2,000 to have it reconstructed.
