k London cablegram stated that, the death has occurred of Admiral Sir Roger Backhouse, in his sixty-first year. Sir Roger Backhouse was First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff from September, 1938, till May this year, when he retired because of illhealth. ■ ’ ‘ •

Mr. R. G. Fawkner, manager of the Te Aroha branch of the Bank of Australasia, has retired after 42 years' service with the bank. Mr. Fawkner joined the bank at Bendigo, and five years later was transferred to New Zealand. He served in Taranaki for many years, and for 14 years he was manager of the Morrinsville branch. He had been in Te Aroha only .two years and a naif.

Mr. G. Hughes, of the staff of the Grey Electric Power Board, will leave to-morrow for Opunake,. having accepted a position with the Opunake Power Board. He was farewelled by members of the Star Football Club, on Saturday evening, and ' presented with a chiming clock. The presentation was made by Mr. A. White, who thanked Mr. Hughes for his services to the club for the past 13 years, for four of which he was secretary, and wished him success in Opunake. Messrs. B. Stuart, W. Williams,, N. Rothwell, L. Dittman, T. Mxlntosh, and M.'Connolly also spoke. , Mr. Hughes has bee'n elected a life-mem-ber of the Star Club.

The death occurred at the Grey Hospital, last evening, of Mr. James Adam Shearer, single, aged. 78 years. Deceased, who was born in Canada, arrived in Ross. as a child, with his parents, and resided there for 58 years. For the past 17 years, during which he had been in- indifferent health, he had resided with, his niece, Mrs. A. Dreckman, at Moana. He followed the. occupations of bushman and gold-minei* during his active, life, but for the past nine months had been in hospital. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Chamberlain (Ruru), and Mrs. Teague (Ross). The funeral will take place at Ross to-morrow afternoon, leaving Bellamy’s Mortuary at 12 noon.
