NATIONAL REGISTER
AUSTRALIAN PROTEST MEETINGS
[BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.]
SYDNEY, July 14.
The “Sun” says attempts were made to-day in Melbourne and Perth to induce the Prime Minister (Mr. Menzies) to arrange a conference with the Australian Council of Trades. Unions to discuss with them the proposed boycott of the national register of manpower.
The Trades Unions executive wants legislative, not verbal, assurances that the register will not be converted into industrial and military conscription. All coal mines in the eastern States are likely to be idle on Monday when stop-work meetings will be held to protest against the register. The Federal Attorney-General (Mr. W. M. Hughes) declared in Sydney today: “Those who object to defending Australia within Australia are unfit for free citizenship.” The Broken Hill miners declare that they will refuse to fill in the official forms and intend to burn them.
