DAMAGE AT OAMARU.

[l’Ei; PKESS ASSOCIATION.]

OAMARU, May 15

Heavy seas at Oama.ru last night and this morning, caused some damage to parts of the foreshore at flic north end of the town. The sections damaged are those where protection works are not. so tar advanced, the seas undermining the soft clay tc carry away part, of the cliff face. Where the protection works arc completed with an tipron of Itettv.v stone and concrc'o blocks no damage was evident. Most of the destfiiclion was. done on a section about all yards north of Nen Street, where the lemporarj' railwaj' line along' the edge of the cliffs was undermined by the seas. A gang of mes was engaged yesterday in lifting parts of this line with heavj’ jacks and moving it back to firm ground, in one or two places the line had to be moved back about eight, feet. There was also some erosion at the mouth of Oamarti Creek, where the foreshore has been built out for some distance with rubble from the Oamarti Harbour Board’s quarry.

The roar of the heavy seas could be heard plainlj' this morning in parts of the town and manj- inspected the foreshore to view the damage. The seas broke continually over the breakwater throughout the day. but here no damage could bo seen either to the Ramsay extension or flu.’ rock apron.
