THIEVES FOILED
STRONGROOM TOO STRONG. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.J HAMILTON, May 13. A violent explosion which wrecked the fittings on a strongroom door, smashed windows, and left pieces of metal in office furniture, was the result of a visit paid by thieves in the early hours of this morning to the offices of the Waikato County Council, Hamilton. The intruders failed in an attempt to force the strongroom door and left empty-handed. Entry to the building was gained by forcing a window at the real'. The intruders, apparently finding that everything of value was locked in the strongroom, set about methodically to wreck the fittings on the heavy door. They succeeded by using a. heavy charge to break the fittings on the door. The attempt was then apparently abandoned.
When members of the county council’s staff entered the building this morning it looked as if it had suffered a. shrapnel explosion. Bits of metal were sticking to the furniture and the walls -were scarred by flying debris.
