DEATH OF LORD NEVILL [PBESS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.] LONDON, May 13. The death has occurred of Lord William Nevill, aged 78. He was twice imprisoned for fraud, and wrote a book of his experiences in gaol. NEW MAURETANIA. RUGBY, May 13. The new Cunard-White Star liner, Mauretania, will leave the yards at Birkenhead, early to-morrow, morning, on the eve of her trials. Her keel was laid, on May 24, 1937, and her building has made a new record in liner construction.

TREASON CHARGES.

Lcib Schencker, a naturalised American Jew, confined at Reichenberg, is soon to be transferred to Berlin, to await trial in the People’s Court, on charges of plotting against Herr Hitler, and of high treason.

CHURCH IN AUSTRIA.

VIENNA, May 14. As a consequence of the disestab-

lishment conference, the Bishops have decided to finance the Catholic Church in Austria partly from a church tax and partly from voluntary conti ibutions. Herr Buerckel must approve the Budget.

ROTHSCHILD PROPERTIES

Baron Louis de Rothschild has been released from the Hotel Metropole, where he had been detained since the Anschluss. He immediately went to Paris. There, it is understood, the English, Swiss, and French branches of the Rothschild family are now arriving in order to hear his account of the seizure of Rothschild properties in Germany and Austria. Baron de Rothschild told his brother that Nazis made him scrub floors.

The Kuala Lumpur correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says that the Federal Council of the Malay States has decided to offer £487,000 for Imperial defence.

NEW ZEALANDER’S SUCCESS

Commonwealth Fund fellowships for two years, beginning in September, include an award to a New Zealander, H., L. Hume, wh’o will go to the University of California, to study engineering.
