England Avon both singles., matches on the final day of the Davis Cup contest at Brighton, to defeat. Nerv Zealand. which, having Avon the doubles, led by tAvo rubbers to one when the third day's play began. The results were- as folloAv: — First Singles: C. E. Malfroy (N.Z.) defeated R. A. Shayes (England) 4/6, 6/2, 6/2, 5/7, 6/3. C. E. Hare (England-)' defeated A. D. Brown (N.Z.) C/3,. 6/4. 6/3. Doubles: D. C. Coombe and C. E.: Malfroy (New Zealand); defeated C. E. Hare and F. 11. D. Wilde (England) C/3, 2/6, 6/3, 6/2. Second Singles: R. A. Sh.a-yes (Eng-' land) defeated A. D. Brown (N.Z.) C./.3, C/4, 7/5. C. E, Hare -(England) defeated C. E. Malfroy (N.Z.,) 7/5, 6/4,’ 6/4.

Brown played with his hand in .plaster, because of an injury. Shayes opened poorly, but struck form in the; third game of the first, after which' Brown’s stolid game, was no match for his opponent’s. Shayes’s crisp volleys and flashing drives, were marred by. spasms of carelessness. In the deciding match -between Hara and Malfroy, the Englishman, with cunning cuts and 1 spin shots, led 4/3, but. mistakes enabled Malfroy io diatv level at 4/4. Malfroy was hri>| limit with short angled balls and welltimed lobs, and the score ran. to 5 all. Flare recovered his touch and, won the set.

Hare Avas inaccurate early in the second set, and Malfroy, playing at the top of his form, evened at 4/4. Hare’s long reach Avas advantageous and helped him in recoveries, and he won the set. In the third set, Malfroy •was within a point of making the score 5/5, but a grand lob sent him; back. Hare safely tapped aAvay a return for the match.

Wallis Myers, Avriting in the “Daily Telegraph,” states that the British players Avere inferior in. tactics. and confidence.

His inconsistency against BroAvn almost cost Shayes the match and Britain the tie. He made- countless (.’Dors, but got going against the erratic Brown later.

By defeating NeA\- Zealand, England has. qualified to .meet the Avinners of the match 'between China and France at Wimbledon, in a fortnight.;
