COBDEN BRIDGE TRAFFIC.

[to the editor.] Sir.—It is pleasing to notice the care and speed now exercised by motorists on Cobden Bridge. As I was cycling a few nights ago from Cobden to Greymouth. on approaching the bridge a. car was coming behind me and a. mot-or-cyclist coming off the bridge and proceeding to Runanga. He slowed down and allowed me to get on his right-hand side and thus avoided crossing my track. If this rule of giving way to traffic proceeding from Cobden to Greymouth were embodied in the new proposed by-laws, there should be no accidents where ordinary care is taken. At the Greymouth end of Cobden Bridge the risk of three-way traffic is intensified by the humps of asphalt placed between the rails. The Mawhera Quay crossings also are uneven. If these crossings were conslrncted with concrete slabs they would be as good as the Harbour Board’s quarry railway crossings at Cobden. Then, again, motorists who are proceeding to Omoto should sound a warning to oncoming traffic from Cobden Bridge. If this is done. 1 think our highway can be made reasonably safe.—l am etc. SAFETY FIRST.
