“LIKE PACK OF CARDS." CROYDON, January .11). Returning ro his home in Wilfordrcad, Croydon, to-night, Mr. Alfred Allen was about to open the front door when he heard ’a loud crack. He jumped back into the road in alarm. A second later the whole house collapsed in front of him like a pack of cards. Fortunately Mrs. Allen and the family were out. at. the rime and there was no personal injury. The house, which was built 7" years ago, was one of a row scheduled for demolition under a Croydon Corporation clearance scheme. The sound of the crash was heard over a large area and a. crowd quickly gathered. At first, it was thought, that, the collapse was due to 'a bomb. A Mr. Rackham. who lives in tire road, said that when he heard the crash ho ran into tiw street. "I saw a large cloud of dust rising.” he said. "I ran to (lie spot and found llmf (ho bouse had disappeared." Mr. Allen said, the incident occurred just, before 11 p.m. "1 had just got out my keys and was: about to open the door when 1 heard the crack.
