OBITUARY

MR J. McNAIR. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, March 12. The death occurred at Christchurch tc-dav in his sixty-tifth year, of Mr John McNair, railway engineer, who retired from the position of District Engineer at Christchurch in May, 1938. Mr McNair was born near Glasgow and came to New Zealand when he was eight years of age. He received his schooling at Glentunnel, and as a youth entered the teaching profession. Ho taught, at Rakaia for a while, and in 1901 he joined the Public Works Department as an engineering cadet. He had experience on railway location in the Taranaki and Gisborne districts, ami construction experience on the North Island Main Trunk Railwax. He was selected to carry out seme of the early investigations in

connection with hydro-electric proposals. While engaged on that work Mr McNair was selected from a number of applicants for the position of assistant engineer to the WellingtonManawatu Railway Company. When the company was purchased by the Government in December. 19iiS, ; \jr McNair became an officer of the Railways Department. From 1909 to 1914 .he was assistant engineer at Invercargill. and then he was transferred 1.0 Dunedin, where he remained until .1922. He was then sent to Auckland as assistant engineer. In February, 1924, he was appointed District Engineer at Invercargill, and after a

rhert peiiod there he was transferred to Wanganui. He returned to Christchurch as District Engineer in September, 1925. Mr McNair was an associate member of tiie Institute of Civil Engineers (London), and a member of the New Zealand Society of Engineers.

Mi- McNair is survived by a widow, two sons. Messrs Douglas McNair (Christchurch) and Bruce McNair (Wellington), and one daughter. Mrs Wilbur Stewart. (C’hristehui-ch'i.
