All manner of correspondence has been received by the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Adam Hamilton in recent months, but no letter has provided the surprise and satisfaction of one received from the Feilding A. and P. Association to inform him that he had won £2/2/- for guessing the exact weight of two fat pigs at the Association’s show. Mr. Hamilton, who does not claim expert knowledge of the weight of fat pigs, which are not in his line of farming, tried his expert skill in judging the weight of both fat sheep and fat cattle at the without success.
Rats having established themselves in the ceiling of a Hastings house, the occupants decided to utilise the services of the rodents’ age-old enemy the cat. Every night the rats came from the ceiling and enjoyed a diet of soap and anything else available in the wash-house, so a large black cat was shut in the wash-house a night or two ago, and that night all was quiet. Next morning there was no sign of any animal in the wash-house. In a small window over the tubs, however, there was a neat, round hole the size of a cat. With the first round greatly in favour of the rats, the householders are now considering rat-traps.
A modern form of picknicking was enjoyed by several members of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, in Auckland, who made a one-day trip to Great Barrier Island by means of an air liner. The Karemu, one of the passenger Lockheed machines of Union Airways of New Zealand, Ltd., was specially chartered for the occasion. Leaving the Mangere aerodrome at 10 a.m., the flight to the island was made by way of the east coast, and the party spent more than five hours in happy picnic fashion. The return flight was made direct, and the party landed at Mangere about 4.30. The entire outing did not occupy more than six hours and a-half, the modern transport enabling the party to accomplish in that short period a trip which usually requires practically a week-end.
