MAHAR CUP COASTERS DO WELL [FEB PBXSB ASSOCIATION.] BLENHEIM, February 4. There was a close finish to the annual amateur sports contest for the Mahar Cup at Blenheim to-day when the destination of the trophy, held by the Nelson club, was in doubt until the final event, the hop, step, and jump. First and second placiugs to Marlborough men won the cup for that club by 8 1-3 points from Nelson. The final positions were: Marlborough. 58 1-3 points, 1; Nelson, 50, 2; West Coast, 30 1-3, 3; Westport, 16 1-3, 4; and Motueka 5. The meeting was the most outstanding in the history of the competition, nearly 100 members from five clubs competing. A high standard of competition was shown by the breaking of five Mahar Cup competition records. Outstanding efforts were those of F. E. Bartlett (Marlborough) in the 100 and 220 yards events. This is the third year in succession that he has won the double. He won the first Mahar Cup 100 yards race in 1930. W. Weenink, a 14-stone Buller Rugby three-quarter, was second to Bartlett in both races today.
E. Faulding won both the women’s races in the most decisive manner. A young Westport runner, E. Colvin aged 13, impressed with a close third in the women’s 100 yards. The Marlborough cyclists, M. Glenn and R. Forbes, won two races, and R. Burn won a three-mile event.
The Nelson distance runners, D. McMureland and J. Barron, won the half and one mile flat events respectively, but N. Mansenn (Nelson) was disqualified after he had lead the field home in a rough 440 yards race, in which two men fell, and the race was awarded to T. Harker (Greymouth). G. Kennedy, a fast West Coast junior, won both sprints in this section. The most popular win of the meeting! was that of the young Westport girls’] team in the relay for the J. BOOT WINS MILE. SYDNEY, February 4. Leading all the way. V. P. Boot (Canterbury, New Zealand) won the mile championship of New South Wales at the Sports Ground with utmost ease. From half-way he had to make his own running. He finished with a long sprint but was well within himself, and his beautiful striding was undisturbed. He won by 35 yards in 4min 17 l-ssec. Boot’s time was 4 3-5 sec. under A. J. J-lillhouse’s Australian record, but J. W. Alford, of Wales, recorded 4min. 11 3-ssec. at the Empire Games, and his time awaits official recognition. The Sports Ground track, with five laps to the mile, has not such a fast surface as the cricket ground. Moreover, there was breezy weather on Saturday afternoon. The sensation of the meeting was the defeat of Miss Decima Norman, Empire Games title-holder in the 100 yards. She held an apparently commanding lead after 90 yards, but Miss Joyce Walker, with an irresistible finish, equalised the world’s record of 11
seconds, to win by a foot. Miss Norman hud the consolation of easily winning the 90 yards hurdles in 12 l-10sec., breaking the Australian record by a tenth of a second. D. B. Dunn, still a junior, won the 100 yards senior. The time returned in his heat was 9 3-ssec, equalling J. Carlton’s Australian record, but it J s unlikely to be recognised as there was a strong assisting breeze. —Results: —
