HAMMOND AGAIN WINS TOSS ENGLAND’S BIG SCORE [by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] (Recd. January 21, 11 a.m.) DURBAN, January 20. The weather was fine and the wicket good for the opening of the third' Test, between England and South Africa.
Hammond won the toss, for the seventh time in succession in Test, matches.
Hutton and Gibb opened for England, Ed rich having been reduced to No. 7 on the batting list. Gibb was shaky, but Hutton played confidently.
Paynter narrowly escaped being stumped when 54. Wade also missed Paynter just before tea, after which the batsmen scored very freely, despite a defensive field. Rain stopped play. Scores:— ENGLAND —First Innings.
