TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping

MEETINGS TO COME.

January 21, 23. —Wellington. January 21. —Wairio. January 21, 23. —Thames. January 23. —Ashhurst-Pohangina January 27, 28. —Pahiatua. January 28, 30. —Auckland.

Bad Race for Favourites: Since Tamatete won in 1923, Auto pay (1933.) is .the only favourite which has succeeded in the Telegraph Han dicap at Trentham.

Cup Statistics: Advance 10.4 is the only horse tc win the Wellington Cup with lOst or more: and Compris 2.29 is the only horse which has run 2.30 or better in the race. Compris’s time is the New Zealand record for a. mile and a half, and no other horse lias broken 2.30 in any rtlce in the Dominion, although Argentic registered 2.30 in the Metropolitan last season. Riders for Thames:

Riding engagements announced for the first day of the Thames meeting include: —A. C. Messervy, Miss Appellant, Tooley Street; H. Turvey, Mungacre; S. Tremain, Golden Sheila, Luleen, Star Vaals, Aynho; A. G. Parsons, Glen Abb, Royal Abb; N. R. McKenzie, Mintlaw Games; R. E. Horne, Mai de Mer; L. Dulieu, Forlorn, Nuipapa and Prince Rangi. Benevolent:

A two-year-old in C. Emerson’s Riccarton team is Benevolent, a wellgrown youngster by Beau Pere. He had a couple of races in the Spring, and in his second start he ran third to Great Swoop and Scandal at Riccartcn. Since then he has been gelded and he has just come in again after a spell. He will not be severely tested this season, but he should be a good three-year-old. Wardress:

Wardtess was a long way from the leaders when the run home in the Apprentices’ Plate at Trentham yesterday was commenced, and did exceptionally well to get up for third money. She is a likely proposition for the Douro Cup over a mile tomorrow. Another unlucky Riccarton representative yesterday was Wild Talk, and her chance may also come in to-morrow’s big hack event.

Defaulter’s Feat: Defaulter set a new record when he won the Wellington Cup under 8.11 at Trentham yesterday. His impost represented lllbs above weight-for-age, and is the highest weight carried to success by a three-year-old in this handicap, and the manner in which Defaulter won strengthens considerably the -opinion formed earlier that he is the best three-yea,r-old ever to race in the Dominion. The last three-year-old to win the Wellington Cup was Rapine in 1923, and he carried 7.12. Rapine at his best was a first-class horse and a rare stayer. On the day he may have been a trifle lucky to beat Merry Day, which is another factor emphasising the hard task of three-year-olds. Rapine was the only one of that age to succeed since the race has been run at Trentham. At the Hutt Pa,rk winners at three years have been Castaway under 8.0 in 1874, Korari 6.10 in 1876, Cynisca 7.1 in 1890, Renown 8.10 in 1901, Gladsome (dead heat) 8.5 in 1904, and Nightfall 8.2 in 1905.

TRENTHAM—FIRST DAY. RAKAHANGA SURPRISES. WELLINGTON, January 19. The Wellington Racing Club was favoured with fine but gusty weather for the opening of its Summer meeting at Trentham to-day, and there was a large attendance from all parts of the Dominion. The track was in excellent order, and in spite of the wind times were fairly fast. Speculation was brisk, the sum of £ 57,284 being handled, as against £46,363 on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £10,921. Remaining results:— WELLINGTON CUP, one mile and ahalf. 1-1 H. ’ THE RACING DESCRIBED. DIAMOND COTTER’S BAR y W IN. [special to “star.”] WELLINGTON, January 19. Diamond (.'utter v.as, first away in the Trentham Highweight Handicap, and was never headed. He had a clear lead entering the straight, and although this was reduced in the run home lie had an easy victory from Patches, who got up nearing the post to head off Lone Raider. Punurua, Bumble and Youssipof were best of the remainder, the last Io finish being Sir Nigel, who got away badly, Waka and Courtyard. Smart Two-year-Old: Bcaulivre, favourite for the Wellington Stakes, outclassed the field, and was in front from the barrier rise. He entered the course proper in front, of Konneta, Pen and Tc Hero, and the last-named challenged a furlong from home, but. ran about under pressure and Beaulivre had a wire margin at the post. Konneta stalled off a late challenge by To Hero for second. Pen and Kathbella. were next and Gay Son last. Apprentices’ Plate: Ecstatic essayed to win the Apprentices’ Plate from end to end, and when she had a four lengths lead entering the straight from the favourite, Ruatiti, her chance looked very favourable, but she tired in the last furlong and Ruatiti had no trouble in beating her home. Wardress and Passaform

finished fast from well back, and the former got to within a neck of Ecstatic, with Passaform, who was last away, a head in front of Granvale and Capricious. La Bru’s Attractive Win: La Bru, by Beau Pere from Mundane, had an attractive win in the two-year-old event. She was one of the first away and led on to the course proper from Miss Leighon, Lord Midas and Silver Stick. The last-named, also by Beau Pere, finished solidly,

but La Bru had no difficulty in holding on to her advantage. Counter Lunch came from well back for third money, cutting out Gold Salute and Lord Midas on the post. Defaulter Wins Brilliantly: Happy Landing was the only witli’drawal from the Wellington Cup. In a pool totalling close on £9OOO, Defaulter was sent out at an odds on price—the shortest in the history of tho Cup. The Sandwichman went out early and acted as pacemaker until headed off by Defaulter in the last furlong. The Sandwichman was followed early by Lickem, Defaulter, Nightdress, Aussie Ra, Dictate and Wild Chase, and with half the journey covered The Sandwichman’s nearest attendants were Corroboree, The Bigot, Lickem, Defaulter, Dictate and Hunting Cat. The Sandwichman was clear of Corroboree, Defaulter, The Bigot, Aussie Ra and Dictate entering the straight, and it was not until (he last furlong was entered upon that he had to give away to Defaulter, who in a few strides worked his way to the front and the race was all over. Nothing was able to essay a. challenge, and while The Sandwichman stayed on for second money, another light weight and outsider in Aussie Ra got up for third place from Arctic King, who just beat Corroboree and the fast-finishing Wild Chase. Hunting Cat, Argentic, Siegmund, Homily and Peerless followed in that order.

Defaulter’s task was an easy one, and he -was never under pressure except to keep him up to his work. He received a great ovation on returning to the birdcage. The Sandwichman put up a remarkably good performance, and it was hard luck for his West Coast owner to encounter such a. formidable opponent. A feature of the race was the failure of the higher weighted horses, who were outclassed on the day. Wild Chase, however, was responsible fora good race, as he was near the rear at the turn into the straight, and then narrowly missed getting into a place. Dictate did not shape as well as anticipated, while Argentic was never prominent. Favourite’s Failure:

Wild Talk was made a. good favourite! for the Ruapehu Handicap, but missing tho jump out from an outside berth, was several lengths away from the leaders turning on to the course proper. She executed a solid effort in the run home, and her fourth placing was full of merit. The early leaders were Teak and Density, and these led on to the course from Filetto, Daregain, Sternchase, Dorak and Gold Glare. There were some quick changes over the final stages, and just as Sternchase appeared to be the likely winner Gold Glare flashed up to gain a length victory. Vitement came with a late run to secure third money, a length in front of Wild Talk, with Filetto, White Gold, Night Eruption and Saki next.

Surprise in Telegraph: Smoke Screen was considered the best proposition in the Telegraph Handicap, but failed badly after being well placed at the false, rail. Most prominent, to the course proper was Rakahanga drew out at the distance on in the run home from Smoke Screen, Black Thread and Lady Ina. Rakahanag drew out at. the. distance and was never afterwards in danger, winning in a decisive manner from Lady Ina, with Alunga, who came from last place, getting up to beat Black Thread on the post for third honours. Ivar, Top Row, Toro Koura and Smoke Screen followed.

Haughty Winner Prevails: The Anniversary Handicap provided the closest finish of the day. Mister Quex acted as pacemaker to the straight entrance from Amigo, Laughing Lus. 1 ;, Haughty Winner, (Jlessamer ami 'french Fight. Amigo drew out a. furlong from home, but was Soon tackled by Haughty Winner, and this pair had a long struggle, resultnig in Haughty Winner gaining the narrowest of margins. Laughing Lass was a fair third, in front of Trench Fight and Rabble, Trench Fight’s number was pul. up for third, but was later changed to that, of Laughing Lass.

January 28, February I—Nelson. January 26, 28—Forbury Park.

Dunedin Cup; i The Dunedin Cup, a 4.26 two mile event, will be decided at Forbury Park next Thursday. Interest will centre in the reappearance of Logan Derby, who is on a 4.23 mark. He has just returned from Australia, but no indication of his condition has been received yet. His winning form at the last Dunedin meeting will not be forgotten. Blair Athol, Plutus and Ironside are the best recent form horses in the field, while Parisienne, off 48 yards, with Lucky Jack, will have many admirers. Blair Athol is entitled to be favourite on his recent victory at Addington.

Death of Great Hope: Great Hope, winner of the New Zealand Trotting Cup in 1923, died recently at Orange, New South Wales. He was bred by R. McMillan at Halswell, and' after winning the Great Northern Derby Stakes in 1921, he was purchased by a patron of J. Bryce’s stable, under whose supervision he won several important

races, including the New Zealand Derby Stakes. At that time he raced in Mr J. R. Corrigan’s colours, but later he was sold to the Dunedin sportsman, Mr J. Trengrove, for whom Great Hope won a New Zealand Trotting Cup. He later went to Berth to compete at the championship of the Western Australian Trotting Association. He was foaled in 1918.

Unhoppled Trotters: Well-supported horses at the recent Timaru meeting handicapped in the unhoppled trotters’ events at the Forbury Park meeting opening next Thursday are:—Lady Ede, Native Ruler, Patch’s Discovery (Vauxhall Handicap). Lady Ede has been a disappointment since she won so well at Methven. Native Ruler ran into two

places at Timaru, and this trotter is in good form. Patch’s Discovery trotted well enough at Timaru to suggest an early victory, and this may be the chance. Opposition will bo provided by Jenny’s Guy, who raced consistently last season, and Shadileland,, a. placed performer at Canterbury Park, and a winner at Greymouth.
