CHILD KILLED IN PLAY

MISSED CATCH TRAGEDY. LONDON, December 8. A .small enamel mng tossed in play by her mother caused the. death of Doreen Payne, 9. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Payne, of Tideswell-road, Eastbourne, ii was stated at the- inquest. Mrs. Payne said that on Monday she and her two young' daughters were tossing the mug to one another when Doreen missed it and it struck her on the- side of the head. She complained of a. headache, and as she appeared unwell a. doctor was colled in. He ordered her to ho kept warm.

. Dr. A. Patter-.cn said he was called ■to the house and was told what had i happened, but c ould see no bruise. ! abrasions, or swelling, and he thought i the girl was s;i fl'ering from shock.

Dr. A. G. Shorn, pathologist, said he found no external bruising, bin between the muscle and the bone near tho right ear he found a bruise. Below this the thin layer of the skull was severed ami the artery lacerated. Death v.ms due to pressure from the haemorrhage.

The coroner, Dr. E’. F. lloare, re cording- a verdiet oi accidental death mid: "I think it is just sheer misfmtune that the mug happened lo hh ilu child in :i. peculiarly vital part."
