HOSPITALS INSPECTOR

INVERCARGILL, January 18.
Dr. L>. C. McNickle, Superintendent of (lie Southland Hospital for the last six years, has been appointed inspector of hospitals under the Health section of the Social Security Act. Dr. McNickle, who recently obtained leave of absence from the Hospital Board to take a trip abroad, has now tendered his resignation, which will be considered by the Board to-morrow. He will leave Invercargill on Friday for a six months’ trip to Britain, before taking up his new appointment. On his ' return to New Zealand he will reside in Wellington. I A native of Otago, Dr. McNickle entered the Otago University with a junior university scholarship. He had a distinguished academic career, winning the Marjorie McCallum medal for first place in medicine, and the Graduates’ Association’s medal for first place in clinical medicine. He gained tile M.B. and Ch.B. degrees in 1924, | and the M.D. degree in 1929. in 1925 ihe was assistant professor of physiology at Otago University, and helped to conduct the Dunedin Hospital for tubercular outpatients. He was house physician and house surgeon at the Dgnedin Hospital, and in 1927 and part of 1928 he was assistant medical officer at the Dorirua Mental Hospital, where he studied modern psychotherapeutic methods. After 1928 he was assistant' medical superintendent at the Wellington Hospital, and' at the end of 1932 he received his appointment to the Southland Hospital.
