MOSQUE OF AHMED.— The last Sultan to build a mosque as a memorial to himself was Ahmed, who was a contemporary of James I. of England. Although this mosque is an enormous building, it is an extremely graceful structure, and is remarkable for the airy lightness of its design. The motive dome is supported by hugh white marble piers, capped with multi-coloured mosiacs. The building itself is surrounded by six stately minarets.
