Miss K. Guthrie left last evening, on return to Lower Hutt.

Mrs. P. Guthrie, Lower Hutt, is visiting Mrs. 11. Campbell, Blackball.

Messrs M. Ellery and J. Cowie loft to-day, for England, on an extended holiday.

Mrs. P. Coll and Mrs. G. Thompson left yesterday, on a visit to Christchurch.

Mr P. P. Geddes, Stationmaster’s office, Greymouth, will leave on January 26, on transfer to Christchurch.

Adjutant and Mrs. Rawcliffe, of Wairca, who have been appointed in charge of the Hokitika Salvation Army Corps, will arrive on January 19.

A London cablegram announced the death of Sir Alexander Kennedy, prominent in shipping circles. He was born in 1860.

A London cablegram stated that AirMarshal Sir William Gore Mitchell has been appointed Commander-in-Chief of the R.A.F. in the Middle East, as from April 1.

The funeral of the late Thomas Peyman took place this afternoon, at the Cobden cemetery. The services, at the residence of' Messrs. Horan Bros., Coal Creek, and at the graveside, were conducted by Rev. W. Osborne. Brown.

Tho death occurred suddenly at Christchurch, yesterday, of James Joseph Hallinan, husband of Jane Hallman of Cashel Street, Christchurch. Deceased, who was 59 years of age, formerly resided at Brunner.

An Official Wireless stated that Admiral Sir Matthew Best has been placed on the retired list at his own request, to facilitate the promotion of younger officers. Vice-Admiral Sir Reginald Henderson, Third Sea Lord, has been promoted to Admiral, and Rear-Admiral R. H. T. Raikes to ViceAdmiral.

An afternoon tea was held at the residence of Mrs W. Meldrum, Greymeuth, yesterday, when friends, including representatives of the Red Cross Society, met to farewell Mrs G. W. Meade, who will leave on Thursday, for Timaru. Reference ivas made by Mrs McDonnell to Mrs Meade’s work for- the Red Cross Society and other organisations. On behalf of those present, Mrs McDonnell presented Mrs Meade with a crystal bowl. Other speakers -who paid tributes to the jvork of Mrs Meade, were Mrs Ramsay Reid, Mrs Allan Smith, Miss Moffatt, and Miss Broad.
