A further sphere of activity is beginning for the former Union Company intercolonial steamer Kaituna, of 2042 tons gross, which has been sold by the Chinese shipping company which bought her some years ago to a Panama company. Her new owners, Wallem and Co., Ltd., of Panama, have renamed the Kaituna the Needwood, under which name she was launched 34 years ago. The steamer will serve as a tramp. The Kaituna was built in 1904 at Sunderland and soon after her launching as the Needwood she was taken over by the Union Company and renamed. She formerly traded to Greymouth. Several years ago the ship was sold to the Foo Hong Steamship Company, of Hong Kong, which has been using her in. the China Coast trade.
